In the area of capacity development of the UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (UNESCO IESALC), our mission is to build a world in which knowledge and skills are drivers of change and progress.

Fundamental Pillars

The Capacity Development area of the UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (IESALC) has five fundamental pillars that support the activities of the area to form the first community in Latin America and the Caribbean aimed at strengthening the development of competencies and digitalization of HEIs.

To develop national systems of higher education and their institutions.
The essential ingredient of the UNESCO IESALC approach is the transformation that is generated from within, that is, from the institutions themselves, and that is sustainable over time with the incorporation of a formative approach focused on student competencies, guided by three principles: a more active teaching that reinforces student autonomy and independence, the use of technologies as support, and the promotion of innovation and research as drivers of change management.
Promote the democratization of knowledge and foster fair and inclusive societies.
We are committed to being a driving force in strengthening the competencies of higher education institutions and public servants linked to education, so that together we can transform society and build a sustainable and equitable future.
Support the creation of strategic public-private alliances to promote the training of the necessary professionals.
We are aware of the value of multi-stakeholder alliances that allow the development of collaborative spaces to promote substantive changes.
Strengthening the 2030 Agenda and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in HEIs.
In line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, we are proud to contribute to building a more sustainable and just world. We empower our students to become agents of change, driving initiatives that promote equality, respect for the environment and the eradication of poverty.
Strengthen the Declaration of the Regional Conference on Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Promote spaces for dialogue among higher education stakeholders to debate, reflect, exchange and analyze the trends that outline the development of higher education in the region.
